APPLICATIONS

Applications will be available on line 3 to 4 weeks prior to application deadline at www.tucsonaz.gov, then click on the 'JOBS' link in the upper left hand corner. This is where all open jobs can be accessed.

OPEN HOUSES

Tucson Fire will offer Open Houses to prospective applicants. The Public Safety Academy at 10001 S. Wilmot Rd. will be open to the public and provide more information about TFD and Academy life. The dates and times will be determined as we get closer to the testing process. Speakers will be members of the Tucson Fire Department.

WRITTEN EXAM

Those applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will receive an email invitation. All raw scores will be standardized within the candidate pool completing this evaluation and will account for 40% of the final score for those placed on the Eligibility List.
Only the top 200 applicant scores will be invited to participate in the Oral Board Interviews.

CPAT ORIENTATIONS

All applicants will be given the opportunity to attend a voluntary Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Orientation at the Public Safety Academy, 10001 South Wilmot Road, Tucson, Arizona. These orientations provide an overview of the CPAT requirements and testing process. Candidates will watch a video on the CPAT, how to successfully pass the exam with an explanation of the failure points, and receive preparation tips. During these sessions, the candidates will receive "hands-on" familiarity with the test apparatus and receive guidance on specific conditioning regiments and techniques to help them prepare for the test. These Orientations are not required, but are strongly encouraged.

Although it is not required for participation, it is preferred that applicants call 520-791-4701 to schedule an appointment for the CPAT orientations. Also, participation in multiple CPAT orientations is allowed.

CPAT Preparation, CPAT Orientation Guides and video are available at:

CPAT TIMED PRACTICE

Candidates who pass the Written Exam will be provided instructions on how to select a time slot to perform a full timed run through the complete CPAT course. Attendance is not mandatory but is highly recommended. Timed practices on the CPAT course will give the candidates the opportunity to gauge their fitness levels and make adjustments in their training efforts to better prepare them for success in the CPAT.

CPAT

Those candidates who score high enough on the written exam will proceed to this step in the testing process. The CPAT will be pass/fail and times will not affect overall ranking.

ORAL BOARDS

Another component of the testing process is the Oral Board. During this portion of the testing process, the candidates will be asked a series of questions to aid the Tucson Fire Department in the selection process.

Once a candidate has successfully completed the Written Examination, the CPAT and Oral Boards, a total weighted score is calculated and the candidate is ranked (according to their score) on an Eligibility List. Prior to the start of an Academy class, selected candidates must pass a background check as well as a comprehensive physical examination from the City Physician.
