City, Allstate, TPD and Living Streets Alliance launch bicycle/pedestrian safety campaign
The new “Tucson on 2” (two feet, two wheels) safety campaign focuses on saving lives of pedestrians and bicyclists through targeted education, traffic engineering and law enforcement.
Solar-powered signs are a big part of the awareness campaign. They have blinking lights to draw attention to drivers, warning them they may encounter cyclists or pedestrians ahead. The message is to “Look Twice.” Allstate worked with Tucson traffic authorities to determine where to place the signs.
The first sign was installed at Santa Rita Park, on East 22nd Street, where two pedestrians were killed by cars recently. The “Look Twice” message also will appear on bus stops and safety kits being distributed around the city.
As of Dec. 10, 2013 , Tucson Police report 17 pedestrians and three bicyclists were killed in collisions this year. In 2012, six pedestrians and three bicyclists died in collisions.
