IMPROVEMENTS UNVEILED AT SENTINEL PEAK PARK - City leaders, neighborhood leaders, environmentalists and historic preservationists celebrated the completion of $320,000 worth of improvements last Thursday at Sentinel Peak Park. The improvements come in the form of new trail and park entry signs, two new, handicapped-accessible parking spaces, two shaded plazas and a paved path connecting the improvements. For the future, the city has an ambitious plan for the park, for which it hopes to secure $2.5 million in the next Pima County bond election, which could come as soon as 2014. EL CON WALMART COULD BEGIN SELLING ALCOHOL UNDER PROPOSED COMPROMISE - Walmart and residents from the surrounding neighborhoods are hashing out a deal where in exchange for the retail giant closing its doors at 11 p.m every night, the neighbors will drop their opposition to the liquor license. AGENDA SPOTLIGHT: ESTABLISHING AN ACCESS TO CARE TAX - Following a public hearing during tonight's regular meeting, M&C is expected to vote on a proposed ordinance establishing an Access to Care tax. This tax has been requested by and supported by a coalition of local hospitals. The hospitals would pay an assessment to the City, and the City would send the funds to AHCCCS, which would leverage the state's ability to draw down federal Medicaid funds to alleviate the impacts of uncompensated care. PHOENIX CITY MANAGER LEAVING FOR JOB IN CALIFORNIA - Phoenix City Manager David Cavazos has accepted the position of City Manager in Santa Ana, CA., a city of 329,000. The City of Phoenix has a population of about 1.5M. Cavazos, a Phoenix City Hall and city government veteran, was hired as City Manager in 2009. From the Phoenix Business Journal.
