Summary:

The Treat Bicycle Boulevard will upgrade 6 miles of existing Residential Bike Route in central Tucson stretching from the Rillito River Path on the north to the Aviation Bikeway on the south.   It is located between Country Club Road and Tucson Boulevard.  While the Bicycle Boulevard will predominately be along Treat Avenue, the roadway does change names in a few places to Cactus Boulevard and Christmas Avenue in the north and to Bristol Avenue in the south.   In 2009, a grad student from the University of Arizona (Jenny Leijonhufvud) created a concept design for the corridor.  To get an idea of what improvements would be made to the Treat corridor watch the following presentation: Treat Bicycle Boulevard Concept.  Currently, the City is looking for grants to make the improvements happen. 

Lots of mature trees provide shade along the route in the Winterhaven Neighborhood

Amenities and Destinations:

Within ¼ mile of this route, there are five Elementary Schools, four High Schools and six public parks.  Within one mile of this route is the University of Arizona (connects to the 3rd Street Bicycle Boulevard), 30 schools and 11 parks.  The route features some traffic calming elements and has street trees with curb cuts for water harvesting along some parts.  There are also public restrooms and water fountains at La Madera Park and Himmel Park.

Desired Improvements:

  • New crossing devices at Prince, Ft. Lowell, 6th St. and Broadway
  • Upgrade existing HAWK beacons at Grant Rd. and Speedway Blvd. into TOUCAN signals
  • Traffic calming throughout
  • Pavement markings and way finding signage throughout
  • Paved connection to the Rillito River path on the north end of the route
  • Paved connection from the HAWK on 22nd St. to Bristol St. on the southern segment of the route
  • Prioritization of bicycle traffic
  • Improved pavement quality
