* Converting 4-Way Stop to 4-Way Yield
If you have an existing Traffic Circle in your neighborhood with 4-Way Stop Signs, or if you are considering having a Traffic Circle installed in your neighborhood, you may want to consider having 4-Way Yield Signs installed at that intersection to control traffic in place of Stop Signs. A Traffic Circle in combination with Yield Signs at each leg of the intersection can effectively control traffic and slow traffic speeds to safe levels. With your neighborhood Traffic Circle, Yield signs will be used for the benefit of not only bicyclists on their way to work or school but to the overall community.
Process for Converting an Existing 4-Way Stop to 4-Way Yield
Neighborhoods that want to change 4-Way Stop Signs to 4-Way Yield Signs at an existing Traffic Circle location in their neighborhood must follow the same petition process that was required for the installation of a Traffic Circle with 4-Way Stop Signs. They will need to submit to the Neighborhood Traffic Management staff a petition “Traffic Circle Petition-Convert Stop to Yield ” with 60% support from the petition area for the conversion from 4-Way Stop Signs to 4-Way Yield Signs. The petition area required for converting from 4-Way Stop Signs to 4-Way Yield Signs would be the same area as would be required for the installation of a Traffic Circle, properties radiating one block in each direction (on both sides of the street) from the existing Traffic Circle location. Neighborhoods converting from a 4-Way Stop to a 4-Way Yield must follow the same process outlined in our online brochure “Traffic Circles ”
To obtain a petition for converting an existing 4-Way Stop to a 4-Way Yield, click on “List of petitions for submittal”, then click the link for “Traffic Circle Petition-Convert Stop to Yield ” for the Traffic Circle Petition that requests that the Stop Signs at an existing Traffic Circle be converted to Yield Signs. You may also call (520) 791-4259, or e-mail Pqahwas1@tucsonaz.gov to have a petition mailed to you. The cost of installing the new signage would need to funded by the neighborhood (approximately $480 for all four signs).
Process For Installing A New Traffic Circle With 4-Way Yield Signs
Neighborhoods installing new Traffic Circles must follow the same process as outlined in our online brochure “Traffic Circles ”. To obtain a petition for installing a new Traffic Circle, click on List of petitions for submittal then click link for “Traffic Circle Petition-4-Way Yield ” for the modified Traffic Circle petition that requests that Yield Signs be used. If you are unsure about the petition area, please call (520) 791-4259 or e-mail Pqahwas1@tucsonaz.gov and we can clarify that for you.
If you are not sure which way is best, staff from the City's Neighborhood Traffic Management Program and Bicycle & Pedestrian Program can help.
