Gray water is a valuable resource as it makes “double use” of water that otherwise goes down the drain. Gray water systems divert some interior water from clothes washers, bathtubs, showers or bathroom sinks (but not from a kitchen sink, dishwasher or toilet) for use in outdoor irrigation.
State law allows residential use of gray water without obtaining a special permit. While some care must be taken in using gray water, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) publishes some simple guidelines for using this valuable alternative water supply.
